Is your monthly guys' group actually friendship, or is it something else that just looks like it?
C.S. Lewis has a word for the card nights, the golf trips, the group chats: Companionship. In The Four Loves, he's careful to say it isn't the same thing as Friendship, even though we treat the words as interchangeable. Companionship is what forms when people share an activity. Friendship only starts in the moment one person turns to another, mid-activity, and says something true, and the other one recognizes it: "You too? I thought I was the only one."
In this episode, we walk through why that distinction matters more than most men realize, and why it's so easy for a group of guys to log years of consistent hangouts without ever crossing into real friendship.
🔹 THE LEAST NECESSARY LOVE — Why Lewis says Friendship is the one love you could skip entirely and never notice, and why that's exactly what makes it worth protecting
🔹 THE BUILT-IN ALARM — Marriage, kids, and work all come with consequences if you neglect them. Friendship has none, which is why it's usually the first thing to go
🔹 THE TRUE THING — The difference between "I'm good, just busy" and actually telling someone what you're carrying
🔹 THE THIRD THING — Why Lewis says real Friendship needs something outside the two people involved, and how to spot whether your group has one
We also cover why the first time you say something honest in a group that's only ever run on Companionship, it can land awkwardly, and why that's not a sign it failed.
By the end, there's one specific thing to try this week: saying the true thing first, before someone else does.
