Show notes

Have you ever hit a goal you worked years for, and felt almost nothing?

I remember the exact night our net worth crossed our biggest milestone. I sat there waiting for something to hit me, relief, pride, some kind of internal celebration. Instead I opened a new tab and started calculating the next number. Two minutes, and my brain had already moved the finish line.

That pattern has followed me my whole adult life. Paying off $60,000 in debt. Closing on the first rental property. Reaching door number ten. Every milestone felt enormous right up until I touched it, and then it just became the new floor.

In this episode, I unpack why that happens, using a story from Morgan Housel's The Psychology of Money about Rajat Gupta, a self-made multimillionaire and Goldman Sachs board member who had, by any measure, already won. He went to federal prison anyway, trading on inside information for a few million dollars he didn't need. Not because he was short on money. Because some part of him couldn't stop reaching, even after enough had already arrived.

🔹 THE TRAP - Why chasing a number teaches your brain that satisfaction is always one milestone away
🔹 THE FEAR - How "enough" started to feel dangerous to me, like settling instead of peace
🔹 THE FIX - Why Emily and I stopped defining enough with a number and built it around the Six Fs instead

This isn't about giving up ambition. It's about deciding, in advance, what a full life actually looks like, so that when you hit the number, you're actually able to feel it instead of already calculating the next one.

⏱️ What's Inside:
00:00 - The night the number finally hit
- Paying off $60K and building the next spreadsheet by Monday
- Rajat Gupta: the man who had enough and lost it anyway
- Why more convinces you that enough doesn't exist
- The Six Fs: redefining enough beyond your net worth
- This week's exercise
