More kids are anxious, overwhelmed, and struggling than ever before. What if the real issue isn't just what's happening to our kids, but what's happening around them?
Dr. Kenechukwu Ezeibe, known as Dr. Kenny, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has spent the last decade working with kids, teens, and families in Red Deer. In this conversation, he breaks down what it actually means to be a good parent, starting with a question most people never stop to ask: are parents even necessary, and what does nurturing a child's potential really require?
Dr. Kenny walks through the role grandparents and community play in raising resilient kids, why some children start tuning out their parents as early as age five (not just the teenage years), and how to tell if your child has been exposed to something they shouldn't have. He gets specific about the hardest conversations parents avoid, including when to introduce technology and social media, how to talk to kids about sex before a friend or a screen does it for you, and why he is personally cautious about kids and AI after hearing what one chatbot was willing to answer. He also opens up about the Sheldon Kennedy Centre of Excellence in Red Deer, the one stop facility where kids who have experienced abuse can meet with a psychiatrist, a therapist, and police in a single visit, and why a simple treasure chest in that building says more about hope than almost anything else in it.
